Parents will often get a rabbit specifically as a pet for their child.  Your child looks at you with those big eyes and says “please” and the rabbit comes home.  But rabbits are unlike cats or dogs and don’t react the same way to child behavior.

Rabbits have abilities that evolved in the species over thousands of years.  They’re fast, have sharp claws and teeth, and a flight response that motivates them to flee at the first sign of danger.  But those very aids to the rabbit can be harmful to the child.

Rabbits have powerful hind legs.  When possible they’ll use them to run away at top speed.  When they can’t flee, they’ll fight.  But the claws on their hind feet, even trimmed, can rip a nasty gash in a child’s hand, arm or face.  To reduce the odds, teach the child not to stress or startle the rabbit.  Approach slowly, don’t hold the rabbit when it squirms, and never yell or squeal in its presence.  Those ears are large for a purpose!

Kids will need to be instructed how and when to hold a rabbit (and how and when not to).  Rabbits rarely enjoy being held firmly, and then only for short periods.Rabbits often enjoy human company, sitting beside someone and being gently stroked.Usually, though, it is best to stay away from the ears which are a natural magnet for children.  The rabbit uses those for survival and interfering with them will sometimes produce stress.

Rabbits can see almost 360 degrees around.  An eye is located on each side of the head giving them a wide angle of view.  But because of the placement, they have a blind spot about 10 degrees wide just below the chin.The rabbit adjusts for the lack of depth perception we have from stereoscopic vision by moving its head.  They judge the distance of objects by parallax (the two different views gained from two different angles).

Teaching a child about the way a rabbit sees and hears helps them understand how the rabbit approaches the world.  That makes it much easier to explain why some things are safe and others are potentially harmful or stressful to the rabbit.

But beyond physical safety for both the rabbit and child, there are a number of helpful lessons to instill.

Rabbits can be trained to perform a number of amusing behaviors.Helping the child to do that, involving it in the training, benefits both the child and the rabbit.  The rabbit perceives the child as a companion and the child learns to develop skills that apply to many situations:  patience, gentleness, careful observation and so on.

Although it Puppy Training and housebreaking doesn’t sound like the most appealing job in the world, housebreaking a new puppy will play an important part in bonding with the newest member of your family.  Home Puppy Training will teach you patience and leave you with a better understanding of what your puppy wants once he has learned.  In addition, he will learn acceptable behaviors and exactly what is expected of him to live happily and comfortably in his new home.

It’s important to remember that, just like a small child, a puppy’s attention span is very short.  When you teach a young child not to hit, he likely won’t learn the lesson the first time, but instead, gradually after you’ve shown him repeatedly that it’s not okay.  Similarly, you will have to be consistent with your dog when training him.  Also, when housebreaking your puppy, keep in mind that he is not intentionally being a bad dog; he just has not yet learned what behaviors are acceptable!

Start housebreaking your puppy with a simple feeding schedule.  Give him breakfast, lunch and dinner, just as you would yourself.  By doing this you will be helping him become regular with his bowel movements.  Once he has eaten, wait 20-30 minutes and then take him outside.  Watch how long it takes before he is able to void.  This will give you an idea of how long to wait the next time you take him out.  (Within about a week, you should have his schedule down.)  Try to never let him eat at free will, leaving food in his bowl all day, because it will cause him to have accidents and make housetraining all that much more difficult. 

Despite the old rules of training a puppy, you should never hit, rub his nose in his messes, or yell at your puppy.  By doing this, you are telling him it is bad to relieve himself at all!  In addition, most dogs respond negatively to aggressive and mean behavior and it has the opposite effect—they regress in their training rather than advance.  Instead, while housebreaking your puppy take him straight outside when he has an accident.  In addition, don’t forget the praise!  Every time he “goes” where he’s supposed to, praise him lavishly, and soon he will begin to understand exactly what brings praise, and what brings that disappointed face.  During the process, don’t forget that full control of the bladder and bowels won’t happen until 16 weeks of age, so don’t expect too much from your puppy in the beginning.

Also helpful in housebreaking a new puppy is to buy a stain remover/ odor relief spray.  Household cleaners and sprays cannot be smelled by dogs; only those made for animals will work.  When an accident happens, clean the mess and spray immediately.  This will cover the odor left and your puppy will not try to mark his territory there again.

Remember that housebreaking a puppy is a big responsibility that can lead to you and your puppy sharing a special bond.  Giving encouragement and lots of love will make all the time spent worth your while!

With all the talk about the new Obama dog being hypoallergenic, I thought

I’d try to define what they mean by hypoallergenic and what breeds seem
to be labeled as allergy-friendly. Just for clarification though:
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) tried
Wednesday to correct misconceptions about the matter, with the announcement that there is “no truly hypoallergenic dog.”

“It is a common misconception that people are allergic to a dog’s hair, and
it is falsely believed that dogs that shed less will not cause a reaction,”
the academy said.

“However, allergies to pets are caused by protein found in the animal’s
saliva and skin glands which gets deposited on the hair. These proteins are
carried on microscopic particles through the air as an invisible aerosol.
When inhaled, they trigger reactions in allergic people. As all dogs
secrete these proteins, there is no allergy-free dog.”.

That said, there are dogs that lend themselves, if groomed correctly and in
a timely manner, to less shedding, less hair dander flying around, and then
, as a result, a reduced occurrence of the offending proteins and saliva in
the environment.

As a side note, these dogs do require more frequent grooming. Because many
of these breeds have hair that keeps growing like humans (versus falling
out once it reaches a certain length), it must be brushed or cut often or
it will get horribly matted.

A bird aviary is the most important piece of equipment you’ll need to purchase for your new bird. A suitable aviary can assist in keeping your bird safe and healthy. There are a lot of aviaries to select from on the market which can be difficult for the new bird keeper.. The big question is how to choose the right one?

To start with, study the species of bird you are intending to keep. If you are housing a parakeet, cockatiel or some other long tailed bird species, you will need a long aviary to ensure your bird is getting adequate exercise. Ideally, the bird aviary will be adequately long enough so the bird can actually fly from one side to the other. Any birds that have a heavyset body, such as a lovebird or a Senegal parrot, gets a good deal of exercise by climbing around in the aviary. These birds require an aviary that is taller rather than it is wide.

You should then consider the size of the aviary. Generally it is a good idea to purchas the biggest aviary you can afford for your bird, a newly weaned handfed baby bird may feel lost and terrified in a large aviary. A young bird also may have difficulty locating food and water dishes. If it is affordable, buying a smaller aviary while your bird is a baby and them moving onto a bigger aviary when it is older would be a good idea.

When choosing your bird aviary, keep in mind the spacing between the bars. A good looking $400 bird aviary will not be very successful if it can fit through the bars! When considering using an aviary with wire mesh it will be important to compare the sizing of the hole in the mesh to the size of your birds head. A bird aviary constructed using one inch mesh is just the right size for a cockatiel to stick a head through. When you have determined the aviary size and bar spacing, look at a few other facets of bird aviary design. Look at the cage tray. When you are removing it to clean it, is there a grate in the aviary to prevent the bird from escaping? Will the tray be adequately deep to catch the mess of your bird? If the aviary has a deep tray, then you may still find that your bird scatters a lot of seed hulls and feathers on the floor if there’s no cage apron. While you can place your bird aviary in a plastic apron base or cover the bottom of the aviary with a cloth apron, a built in metal apron is a good characteristic.

Finally, do not forget to have a look at the aviary cups. You should be able to access the cups without having to enter through the main door of your bird aviary. If you are buying a bird aviary for a larger bird, the cups should actually bolt to the aviary unless you want to spend every morning and afternoon for the next 50 years reaching for cups that your bird has flung onto the bottom of the bird aviary
