My best friend’s cat passed away last week. Needless to say she was more than a little upset, but then he wasn’t just a cat he was part of her family. He was her companion, her confidant and her friend. She only found out he was ill about a month ago when she took him to the vets in Sussex and they found a lump in his stomach, she would have done anything and paid any amount of money to save him but unfortunately they had found it too late.

In the end the decision was out of my friend’s hands, but for a lot of people when their pets fall ill or are injured they are faced with a horrible decision. Obviously there is no such thing as NHS for pets, and for those who don’t have pet insurance it’s an extremely costly business (my friend paid almost £90 for a blood test that didn’t even help to identify the problem). Of course most people would do anything to save their pets and money isn’t an issue when it comes to such an important member of the family.

And for those who can afford it there is no end of veterinary help available, from basic medicines and physiotherapy for pets to specific animal cardiology and ophthalmology facilities. If it’s possible for the illness to be treated it will be treated, and there is a good chance that the unfortunate animal will make a full recovery. But what about when a pet is suddenly injured or taken ill and their owner can’t afford to pay for the (often massive) bill? It’s hardly fair that one innocent animal’s life should take priority over another because of the size of their owners’ wallets.

One young cat owner from Brighton took a unique approach to tackling this problem when his cat Mumble was seriously hurt in the street and needed urgent treatment to survive. Rory O’Connor had no pet insurance, and Mumble’s treatment at a veterinary hospital in Sussex was estimated at around £1000, much more than he could afford, but he couldn’t bear to just watch her suffer. So in what he described as a ‘last ditch effort’ Rory started a group on Facebook called ‘Save Mumble’, inviting all his friends to spread the word about Mumble’s plight and asking everyone to make donations of £1. At first he thought he’d have no chance of success but his plea touched the hearts of thousands of people on facebook. People on his friends list told all their friends about it, and within a short couple of weeks he had raised enough cash to pay the bill for all of Mumble’s treatment in full. She made a full and speedy recovery, all thanks to the power of social networking!

Although for many people the word pig conjures up images of a farm yard with huge pigs rolling in mud, or eating at a pig trough, for some it is a well mannered pig sitting in the living room with you as you watch television. Teacup potbellied pigs are becoming increasingly popular as domestic pets around the country. They are much smaller than the standard farm pig and the regular potbelly pig, and they are commonly seen with many colors, such as mixed black and white coloring; or all black, all white, silver coloringand even chocolate. Not really the size of a teacup. But compared to a full grown regular pig at 600-800 pounds or a full grown regular potbelly pig at 120 – 200 pounds then they are teacup. Adults typically weigh around 40 - 65 lbs, are fully-grown at 2-3 years and are about the height of a cocker spaniel. The pigs require about the same amount of care as a dog and are low maintenance pets, living 15-20 years. Teacup potbellied pigs are popular city pets, and their small size lends itself well to apartment living. Pigs litter box train very quickly.

The regular potbellied pig originated in Vietnam, and is a combination of several breeds. Given the chance, they can interbreed with common farm pigs and wild boars, as they are all part of the pig family. The teacup pigs were bred first in Devon, England.

Not all veterinarians treat pigs making owning one more troublesome that a cat or dog. All types of pigs need maintenance with tusks trimmed and hooves trimmed. Pigs are best kept in pairs or groups if they are kept outside as they are social animals. While in your house they will want your attention. Like children they need toys to play with so they can amuse themselves. This keeps them stimulated and active. Left to their own if pigs get bored they will often become destructive, they are very intelligent. Inadequate attention during playtime can compel pigs to do anything from rooting up plants to taking up linoleum floors and eating drywall. If you are not keeping your pig outside in a confined area then they need their own confined area in the house. They are clean and essentially odor-free, so it is not usually difficult to find a room where they can roam.

Teacup pigs require specialized care of time and resources and should not be taken without a serious commitment. Do your due diligence before getting a pig to make sure that you and a pig are compatible. Shelters are overflowing with abandoned pigs whose owners did not anticipate the kind of attention that their pet would need. Rabbits can live a long time, some can reach ten years of age. That in itself can be either a good or bad thing, depending on your point of view. People often view rabbits as something to amuse the kids when they’re yound. but having the life expectancy of a dog makes them a long term commitment. Think ahead.

Rabbits are prone to a few diseases that may be hard to treat. Since they can’t vomit, a hairball can cause them serious intestinal difficulty. The proper diet will help minimize the odds. They can contract something called RHD (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease), a virus that can cause death. Even if they survive, they can spread it to other pet rabbits. Rabbits can be subject to flea and mite infestations, with all the potential problems that it brings.

Rabbits require some grooming, more than a cat, but considerably less than a dog. Though bathing them is unnecessary, and indeed not generally a good idea (rabbits can become overheated easily), they still benefit from a regular nail trim and brushing.

Some of that grooming effort is for the benefit of the rabbit, some of it is for you. Keeping them well brushed will help reduce the amount of hair around the house. Trimming their nails keeps them from being quite so destructive around the house if they’re left free to roam around.

A pet rabbit that is out of the cage can be quite destructive. They love to dig and they may chew almost incessantly. A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing and one way they keep them under control is to gnaw on things. That may be find outside, but in the house it can be a problem.

Rabbit proofing your home involves some effort and sometimes a moderate expense. Rabbits are fascinating creatures, not least becuase they seem at first blush to be so common. But, in fact, rabbits come in several dozen breeds and exhibit behavior that is surprising to anyone who hasn’t owned on.

The America Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes about 50 different breeds, though there are more types of rabbit. But, of course, as a professional association concerned with keeping things orderly they have fairly strict standards. Snowshoe hares aren’t among them, for example. Hey wait, they argue, we’re interested in only domestic breeds. Fair enough. But do the rabbits know the difference?

But all those breeds have one thing in common that is something they are NOT: they’re not rodents. Though similar, rabbits are Lagmorphs. It sounds like something from a science fiction book? Rodents, on the other hand are, well, Rodentia.

They have an interesting way of maturing, too. The average, well-cared for domestic rabbit has a roughly 10 year life span, whereas for humans it’s about 75 years. The like expectancy varies from breed to breed. Yet a human isn’t sexually mature at 3 3/4 years (75 divided by 20, which is 10 years/0.5 years), while a six month old rabbit is. They grow up fast, don’t they?

Their gestation lasts about a month, and it is true, they can have a lot of babies. Baby rabbits are called ‘kits’. But don’t confuse ‘kit’, as in rabbit baby, with ‘kit’ as in tool bag. They don’t like it when you try to pry beer bottles open with their teeth.

their teeth never stop growing,unlike human teeth that shift but don’t lengthen after adulthood. That’s not usually a problem, since they like to gnaw on just about anything they can get their hands on. Or, more accurately, their teeth on. Oh, maybe that is a problem where you live?

But they’re not just mindless chewers. Rabbits are a lot smarter than some people think. Rabbits can be trained to use a litter box and can sometimes even perform clever tricks. One Japanese man raised a rabbit called Oolon (after a type of tea). The rabbit could balance small objects on its head as it walked (or hopped) along. Quite a feat when you consider that most humans can’t do that, especially if they have to hop.

Rabbits can also be affectionate. Part of that head balancing ability may come from a rabbit’s tendency to tuck its head under an owner’s chin. Of course, you have to get along fairly well for a long time to get it to relax enough to do that. Rabbits are somewhat high strung. Or, maybe they’re just particular.

The stress they feel comes about whenever they sense danger. That is very easy for them to do since their eyes have almost a 360 view of what is around them. Set on the sides of the head, they geta peripheral view of almost 180 degress on each side. But because of the arrangement, they do have about a 10 degree blind spot directly in front just below the nose.

So, if you stand in front of your rabbit and lecture them about something they did wrong, don’t assume they’re stupid or stubborn. They may just not be able to see you. Of course, with those ears they don’t have any excuse for not hearing. They may just be ignoring you. They’re pretty smart creatures, after all, and they know your shoe was made for chewing even if you don’t.
